The wheel of an Alfa Romeo vehicle

Your luxurious, high-performance Alfa Romeo has a range of sophisticated safety features. But the number one thing keeping you safe on the road are your brakes. When the brakes of any vehicle are allowed to fall into disrepair, you’re at risk of losing your stopping power. So if you notice any of the following four warning signs, visit your closest Alfa Romeo dealership without delay for brake repair.

Your Brake Fluid’s Leaking

Leaking brake fluid is no laughing matter. As soon as one of your brake hoses springs a leak, its hydraulic power is lost. This means your foot on the brake pedal can no longer transmit power to at least one of your brake calipers.

If this happens, you’re likely to notice a spongy feeling to the brake pedal, and your car won’t be slowing down as it should. In very bad cases, the result could be catastrophic brake failure. So if you ever suspect a leak, pull over at once and check your brake hoses and undercarriage for any sign of an oily yellow or brown fluid.

Your Pads Are Squeaking

Brake pads do the lion’s share of stopping your car when you activate the brakes. The upper friction layer of each pad clamps onto the rotor disc, creating friction that brings you to a halt.

Every time a brake pad is used, a little more of the friction layer is shaved away. Eventually, a worn-out pad will begin to emit squeaking sounds. This is an intentional noise designed to alert you that it’s time for a new pad.

Your Rotors Are Vibrating

Your Alfa Romeo’s rotor discs are made of a special, highly durable carbon-ceramic material. After enough time, even such durable rotors can become scraped and scored by brake pads, stones trapped in the caliper, or something else.

This is especially likely when a rotor is weakened by overheating, which can even cause it to warp out of shape. A damaged rotor will often create odd vibrations, which you might feel through the steering wheel and brake pedal. A vibrating rotor will need to be repaired or replaced.

Your Calipers Are Clicking

On rare occasions, small parts inside the caliper can sometimes come loose. If a pin or bolt comes free and gets stuck in the caliper, you’re likely to hear it clicking or grinding awkwardly when you brake. If this occurs, you’ll probably need to have a technician take a look.

Inspect Brakes Often at Your Alfa Romeo Dealer

Rather than wait for a problem to emerge, it’s better to keep your brakes in top-notch condition with periodical brake servicing. Most drivers are recommended to have their brakes inspected every six months or so. And brake fluid should be flushed once every two years under ordinary driving conditions.
